Short answer

Silhouette Studio Basic Edition can’t open SVG files; that needs Designer Edition or higher. On Basic, use a DXF file, or open a large, sharp PNG and use the free Trace panel. Upgrading to Designer Edition opens SVGs directly.

You bought an SVG, or made one, and Silhouette Studio won’t open it. If you’re on Basic Edition, the free version that comes with every Cameo and Portrait, that’s expected: opening SVG and PDF files is a Designer Edition feature. You still have good options. Here are three.

Why Basic Edition can’t open SVG

Silhouette splits Studio into editions. Basic Edition opens its own Studio files, DXF files and pictures (PNG, JPG, BMP). SVG and PDF import are part of the paid Designer Edition and higher. Nothing is wrong with your file or your computer.

Option 1: trace a clean PNG (free)

Basic Edition has a free Trace tool that turns a picture into cut lines. It struggles with soft, small or JPEG-compressed images, because it follows every blur and speck. The trick is to give it a perfectly clean picture:

  1. Open your design in Vectacle. If you have the SVG, open it in SVG to PNG instead and download a large PNG (4× or a print size at 300 DPI) — then skip to step 3.
  2. If you only have a picture, convert it, then click PNG to download a large, razor-sharp version of the traced result.
  3. In Silhouette Studio, open the PNG (File › Open, or drag it in).
  4. Open the Trace panel, click Select Trace Area and drag a box around the design.
  5. Adjust Threshold until the whole design is yellow, then click Trace Outer Edge for a single outline (stickers, Print and Cut) or Trace for all inside details.
  6. Move the picture away and delete it; the red cut lines stay.

Because the edges are already crisp, the cut lines follow them closely, with no wobble from JPEG fuzz.

Option 2: upgrade to Designer Edition

If you buy a lot of SVG designs, Designer Edition is a one-time upgrade that unlocks SVG and PDF import, plus extra design tools. Once upgraded, File › Open opens SVGs directly with their cut lines.

Option 3: ask for a DXF

Many design shops include a DXF with their SVG downloads for exactly this reason. Basic Edition opens DXF files. Note that DXF files usually lose colour information, so layered designs arrive as outlines you colour yourself.

Questions

Which Silhouette Studio editions open SVG files?

Designer Edition and the editions above it. Basic Edition, the free version that comes with the machine, does not.

Can Basic Edition open DXF files?

Yes. Basic Edition opens DXF, as well as PNG, JPG and BMP images, and its own Studio files.

Is the Trace tool in Basic Edition good enough?

For clean, high-contrast images, yes. The problems come from soft, small or JPEG-compressed pictures, which is why cleaning the image first makes such a difference.
