Short answer

In Design Space, open a project, click Upload, then Upload Image, browse to the .svg file and click Upload. Select it under Recent uploads and click Add to Canvas. On a phone, save the SVG to Files first, then use Upload › Browse Files.

Uploading an SVG is the cleanest way to get a design into Cricut Design Space: it comes in as a ready-to-cut image with its layers, no tracing or background removal needed. Here is how to do it on a computer and on a phone or tablet, plus fixes for the problems people hit most. Menu names can shift slightly between Design Space versions, but the steps stay the same.

On Windows or Mac

  1. Open Design Space and start a New Project (or open the canvas).
  2. Click Upload in the left-hand panel.
  3. Click Upload Image, then Browse, and choose your .svg file. (You can also drag the file onto the upload window.)
  4. Check the preview, give the image a name and tags if you like, and click Upload.
  5. The SVG appears under Recent uploads. Click it, then click Add to Canvas.

On iPhone, iPad or Android

  1. Save the SVG to your device first. On iPhone and iPad it goes to the Files app (usually Downloads).
  2. Open the Design Space app, start a new project, and tap Upload at the bottom of the canvas.
  3. Choose Browse Files and pick the SVG.
  4. Name it, tap Upload, then select it and tap Add to Canvas.

After it’s on the canvas

  • Check the size in the top bar. Keep the lock closed when resizing so it doesn’t stretch.
  • Layers: a multi-colour SVG shows one layer per colour in the Layers panel. Select a layer to change its colour or material, or hide it.
  • Ungroup if you want to move pieces separately; Attach to keep pieces in place on the mat.
  • Print then Cut: select everything and use Flatten to turn it into one printable image with one outer cut line.

Fixing common problems

ProblemCause and fix
Everything is one black shapeThe SVG was made as a single-colour cut. Convert again with a colour mode for layers.
Huge or tiny on the canvasThe SVG’s own size was off. Set the width in inches when making it, or resize with the lock closed.
Hundreds of tiny pieces on the matThe trace has too many colours or specks. Lower the colour count and re-make the SVG from a sharper image.
“Upload failed” or a blank previewThe file isn’t a plain SVG (for example a renamed PNG). Re-export it as SVG.
“File Too Large”Cricut accepts at most 5,000 paths in one SVG. Re-make it with fewer colours, or from a cleaner image with less texture.
“Your file includes unsupported items”Design Space can’t layer SVGs with gradients, pattern fills or clipping paths. Re-make it in a cut mode (flat colours only), or in Vectacle untick Smooth gradients. For Print Then Cut, upload a PNG instead.
A box cuts around the designThe SVG includes a background rectangle. Hide that layer, or re-make the SVG with the background removed.

Don’t have an SVG yet? How to make an SVG file for Cricut walks through making one from any picture.

File too heavy or messy? The SVG optimizer makes it smaller without changing the look, and the SVG editor lets you delete stray shapes before uploading.

Questions

Where are SVG files on my iPhone?

Downloads from Safari are saved in the Files app, usually under Downloads. In Design Space, choose Upload, then Browse Files, and pick the SVG from there.

Why is my SVG one black shape in Design Space?

The file was made as a single-colour cut, or its colours were merged. If you want layers, convert the picture again with a colour mode (Clip art / stickers in Vectacle) and upload the new SVG.

Why is my uploaded SVG the wrong size?

SVG files carry their size, and Design Space uses it. Set the width in inches when you make the SVG, or resize it on the canvas with the lock icon closed so it keeps its proportions.
